Peter Brant, founder of Greenwich Polo Club, is a prominent businessman, collector and advocate for the arts. Today, Mr. Brant remains an avid polo player and patron.

 

Mr. Brant has always loved horses, including show and race horses. His involvement with the sport of polo dates back to the 1970s, when he met polo legend Thomas B. “Tommy” Glynn at the Fairfield Hunt Club. Under Mr. Glynn’s tutelage, Mr. Brant quickly grew to love the game. Dedicating himself to a rigorous training regimen and intensive study of the logistical demands of the sport, Mr. Brant has become one of polo’s foremost patrons. With Mr. Brant’s rise as a patron and player, Greenwich Polo Club has expanded from one to three fields and offers some of the finest polo available on the East Coast. Greenwich Polo Club continues to work to improve its fields and facilities.  Recently, the club has begun an ambitious project to expand appreciation for the sport into new demographics, building a broader and more diverse audience.

 

In 1979, Mr. Brant founded the White Birch polo team, which soon earned a reputation as a formidable opponent.  Polo “hall of famers” Bennie Gutierrez and the Argentine professional Hector Barrantes served as early managers of the White Birch team. Mr. Brant worked to develop a superior string of horses and sought to bring on board the most talented players—continually pushing the level of the game and elevating professional polo worldwide. With his work with the Greenwich Polo Club and the White Birch polo team, Mr. Brant has arguably done more than any other patron to mentor and promote young talent. The White Birch polo team has gained a global reputation for the strength of its organization and distinguished record of successful matches. By the time White Birch won its first U.S. Polo Championship in 2005, the team had already amassed an impressive record.  To date, White Birch has won more than 30 championships/tournaments at the 26-goal level or above. Mr. Brant’s own performance on the team led to his becoming one of the top-ranked amateur polo players in the world. In the ten years between 1979 and 1989, he rose to a 7-goal handicap—at the time the highest in the world of amateur polo. In 1986, he was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

 

In addition to his 36-year association with the Greenwich Polo Club, Mr. Brant is a co-founder of Bridgehampton Polo Club in Bridgehampton, New York where he continues to play, is a member of International Polo Club Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Florida, and is a former member of Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in Wellington, Florida.  Mr. Brant was instrumental in the growth of high-goal polo in South Florida which also included co-founding Windsor Polo Club in Vero Beach.  Mr. Brant is the founder of Saratoga Polo Association in Saratoga Springs, New York.  Polo in Saratoga was started by the Whitney family in 1897 and was played until 1938 —Mr. Brant started the present-day club in 1979. All of the aforementioned clubs have earned reputations for offering the highest caliber polo played by the best players in the sport.

In 2017, Mr. Brant was honored with The Harriman Cup Award for his contributions to the world of polo. The Award is given to those who embody the leadership, public service, and staunch advocacy and support for equestrian sports that were characteristics of Averell Harriman.

Mr. Brant’s record of impressive victories extends beyond the world of polo to that of horse racing. He was the breeder and owner of Gulch, winner of the Breeder’s Cup Sprint in 1988 and was co-owner of Swale, who won the Kentucky Derby in 1984.  Mr. Brant holds the distinction of being the only breeder in the history of the Kentucky Derby to have bred the sire of, dam of, and winner of, the Kentucky Derby: Thunder Gulch in 1995.
